Sir John Key to join ANZ Board

The Chairman of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited David Gonski AC today announced Rt Hon Sir John Key GNZM AC will join the ANZ Board effective immediately

Sir John was New Zealand’s 38th Prime Minister serving from 2008 until 2016. After retiring from a distinguished career in politics, Sir John was appointed Chairman of ANZ’s New Zealand subsidiary in January after joining the Board in October 2017.

 

Commenting on the appointment Mr Gonski said: “Following a successful international career in business and politics, Sir John has the ideal credentials to further strengthen ANZ’s Board. Our New Zealand business has already benefitted from his significant experience and I know he will make a valuable contribution to the ongoing success of the broader Group.”

 

A graduate of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, Sir John had a long international banking career in international finance primarily with Bankers Trust in New Zealand and Merrill Lynch in Singapore, London and Sydney. At Merrill Lynch he was Head of Global Foreign Exchange and a member of the Foreign Exchange Committee of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

 

Sir John was made a Knight Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours. He also received Australia’s highest honour, becoming a Companion of the Order of Australia for advancing the Australia-New Zealand bilateral relationship.

 

Sir John will stand for election as a Director at ANZ’s Annual General Meeting on 19 December 2018.
