ANZ expands financial literacy training in Tonga to support economic development

Communities across Tonga stand to reap even greater benefits as ANZ expands its flagship financial literacy program MoneyMinded, which is aimed at creating a shift in attitudes, mindsets and behaviour towards managing money. 

Delivered in both English and Tongan, the program will be rolled out progressively across the country – promoting a long-term positive shift in financial literacy levels.


Launching the program in Nuku’alofa, Her Royal Highness Princess Salote Mafile’o Pilolevu Tuita, said: “In my view, MoneyMinded Tonga will have significant benefits for the program participants and will improve the financial skills knowledge and confidence of our people.


“I applaud ANZ Bank for this initiative and I wish you and every participant success with the program.”


Speaking about the program, Bernie Poort, ANZ CEO Tonga said: “The ongoing delivery of MoneyMinded to the community will build the financial capabilities of individuals and families, promote healthy communities, and will support the overall economic development of Tonga.”


The program, which is being delivered to community groups this week, consists of five core workshops:

  •   Planning for the future

  •   Making money last from one pay day to the next

  •   Understanding the difference between needs and wants

  •   Budgeting

  •   Assertiveness – how to say ‘no’ without causing offence.


The program is informed by community consultation and delivered through partnerships with local community organisations and government.


MoneyMinded is ANZ’s flagship financial literacy program, designed to boost financial inclusion in communities where ANZ operates. To date, 9,000 people in the Pacific have completed ANZ’s MoneyMinded financial literacy training course.
