David Gonski to succeed John Morschel as ANZ Chairman on 1 May 2014

ANZ confirmed that David Gonski will succeed John Morschel as the Group’s Chairman on 1 May 2014 following Mr Morschel’s retirement from the ANZ board today.

ANZ’s Chairman John Morschel said: "It is very pleasing to have someone of David’s calibre succeed me as Chairman. He knows ANZ well having previously served as a director from 2002 to 2007 and we have been working closely since February to ensure a smooth transition.

“It has been an honour to have served as an ANZ director since 2004 and to have been Chairman of ANZ over the past four years. The opportunity to work with Mike Smith and his very professional management team has been particularly rewarding for me.

“It is very pleasing to see the success of the super regional strategy which has positioned ANZ strongly for the future. I am proud of what has been achieved at ANZ during my time on the board and I know that I am leaving ANZ a stronger bank for customers and a stronger bank for shareholders,” Mr Morschel said. Mr Gonski said: “John has a special ability to focus on strategy and to drill-down into detail. It’s a rare mix and something that John has in spades. He’s made an outstanding contribution to ANZ as a director and as Chairman. On behalf of shareholders and staff, I thank him for his service.

“It is very pleasing to have the opportunity to re-join the board and to succeed John as Chairman. I am looking forward to working with my fellow directors, and with Mike Smith and his management team to continue building a super regional bank,” Mr Gonski said.
