ANZ appoints Craig Sims as Chief Executive Officer Pacific

ANZ today announced the appointment of Craig Sims as Chief Executive Officer Pacific, reporting to Group Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Alex Thursby.

Mr Sims comes to the Pacific business from ANZ National Bank, where he has been Managing Director Retail of The National Bank brand since October 2004.

ANZ Chief Executive Officer Mr Mike Smith said: “Continuing to drive growth and innovation in the Pacific is an important element in becoming a ‘super regional’ bank over the next five years.

“Craig’s considerable experience across all facets of banking recognises this is a key strategic role and that the Pacific business is moving to the next level of growth and innovation,” Mr Smith said.

Mr Sims has more than 20 years banking experience at ANZ National Bank across a broad range of functions including strategic planning, human resources, retail and business banking. He has most recently lead one of ANZ’s core brands in New Zealand to a market leading position, delivering strong results and above market growth as well as creating a greater service culture across the retail business.

As Chief Executive Officer Pacific, Mr Sims will be responsible for the leading bank and business in the South Pacific with 63 branches in 12 countries including American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Island, Vanuatu, Tonga, Timor-Leste and Guam which together employ more than 2,000 people.

Mr Smith commented: “The Pacific business has been growing strongly, with the addition of 364 additional staff, 15 new branches and more than 110 new ATMs in the past year, including the region’s first solar-powered branch and ATM.

“Craig will lead the continuing growth and innovation in banking services to make life easier for customers in the Pacific, including the roll out of new Internet Banking capabilities over the next 18 months,” Mr Smith said.

It was also announced that the non-executive Chairman of ANZ’s Pacific business Bob Lyon will retire.

“I want to thank Bob and wish him well in his retirement. Bob has an incredible passion for the Pacific and he led ANZ’s Pacific business through a period of substantial growth for over a decade until late 2005, when he became non-executive Chairman,”

Mr Smith said. Mr Sims will commence in April replacing Mike Guerin who recently left ANZ.
